Collective action needed to restore labour peace – Seifsa president

It is not in the interest of South Africa’s embattled manufacturing industry to allow the trade unions in the sector to lose their “control and authority”, Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of South Africa (Seifsa) Henk Duys said on Friday. Delivering the federation’s yearly presidential address, in Johannesburg, Duys, who proclaimed himself to be an “unashamed capitalist”, said there was a need for the social partners to “work together to restore peace, before it is too late”.

Competition Tribunal approves East Rand Mall acquisition

The Competition Tribunal has unconditionally approved the acquisition by property loan stock group Redefine and Vukile Property Fund of the East Rand Mall, in Boksburg, from Sanlam Life Insurance for R2.23-billion. The property companies reported on Wednesday that all conditions precedent to the acquisition had been fulfilled and that the transfer of the property was expected to take place in early April.

Deepening strikes hit Shell fuel deliveries

Shell said on Friday it could not honour fuel delivery contracts around Johannesburg because of a two-week truckers' strike and police shot dead a striking miner, taking the death toll in two months of South African labour unrest to 48. Doubt over local government capacity to deliver – survey

Twenty-eight per cent of South Africans say local government cannot be trusted to deliver the services that citizens expect – a figure that has not improved in recent years, the South African Reconciliation Barometer survey, conducted annually by the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR), has found. E-toll meeting to resume next week

A meeting between the inter-ministerial committee on e-tolling and Cosatu, chaired by Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, will again convene next week.
