Eskom eyes African hydropower, transmission prospects

South African electricity utility Eskom has finalised a draft African strategy, which could result it in taking equity as well as operational positions in generation and transmission projects in the rest of the continent, with its primary focus being opportunities in Southern Africa. CEO Brian Dames says that strategy is currently being canvassed with government, Eskom’s sole shareholder, and that the utility’s role in the rest of the continent will be clarified through that process.

Eskom gears up to start Sere wind farm construction in April

Construction of Eskom’s 100 MW Sere wind project, which is being developed in Koekenaap, in the Western Cape, is scheduled to begin in April with project funding now fully in place and with a preferred bidder having been identified for the supply and installation of the wind turbines. However, Eskom is not yet in a position to identify the wind-turbine contractor, with that announcement planned following a World Bank review. The project is being managed in line with the World Bank’s procurement guidelines, owing to the fact that it is being partly funded by the development finance institution.

Eskom meets with coal suppliers, calls for new supply ‘pact’

The head of State-owned power utility Eskom Brian Dames met with the leaders of the group’s four main coal suppliers at the weekend to initiate talks on how the miners could assist it in keeping its coal costs under control, so as to limit future electricity price increases. Coal is the largest single cost item in Eskom’s third multiyear price determination (MYPD3) application, which is currently being considered by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa). It makes up R328-billion ...

Eskom outlines plan to trim unplanned outages to 10%

South Africa’s State-owned electricity utility Eskom has approved a new five-year generation strategy, premised on an ‘80:10:10 principle’, which implies average plant availability of 80%, with unplanned outages limited to 10% and scheduled maintenance also set at 10%. This meant that Eskom would, for the first time, undertake “long-duration planned maintenance” during the coldest winter months.

Eskom sets up school to train specialist welders

Eskom CEO Brian Dames says the utility has taken on board criticism over the fact that it is continuing to employ foreign specialist welders at its power station projects and has established an internal welding school to redress the situation. Speaking at a South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry convention on Friday, Dames said Eskom had employed expatriate welders at Medupi and Kusile, owing to the fact that there was a local dearth of such high-level welding skills.

Fedusa to engage World Bank, IMF on labour issues

The Federation of Unions of South Africa (Fedusa) would be part of a high-level delegation of international trade union leaders meeting with the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) next week, the organisation reported on Friday. The delegation, led by International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) general secretary Sharan Burrow, would engage with World Bank head Jim Yong Kim and IMF chief Christine Lagarde, as well as several international financial institutions. The meetings would take place in Washington from February 12 to 14. “It is imperative for Fedusa to be part of this delegation because the discussions will focus on how the policies of the World Bank and the IMF – such as IMF loan conditionality and programmes – impact on workers across the globe,” said Fedusa general secretary Dennis George.

Global airports conference coming to SA

The Airport Cities World Conference and Exhibition (ACE) 2013 would make its debut on African soil this year when it is held at the Emperors Palace Hotel, in Ekurhuleni, from April 24 to 26, London-based event organisers UBM Live announced. The yearly ACE has been hosted around the world for the past 11 years and champions the concept that airports are more than gateways for the transportation of goods and passengers, a perception that has given way to a much broader concept of airports as a business destination and an economic engine for its region and local communities.
